Series 3 E-type
fuel pump relocation and
5 point harness installation

After changing my fuel pump once... I decided the original mounting location, high in the left fender, was a pain... you need to get your arm between the tire and the bodywork, dig thru the crusted mud to feel the bolts, etc...

From a safety point of view, it also places the pump and the fuel lines exactly at the bumper level of the average SUV...  and in case of leak, even not from an accident, fuel would drip on the antenna motor.

Instead, I rigged a sheet metal box which is attached to the boot floor, with a simple clamp around the spare wheel hold down anchor. No holes to drill... Extra insulation on the boot floor is important as the exhaust run underneath. With the insulation, heat around the pump is not a factor.

The SU fuel pump is held in the sheet metal box by a pair of hose clamps, and I added a coverto protect the fittings. As a precaution, I also installed an inline filter between the tank and the pump, and replaced all the hose with marine grade US Coast Guard approved hose, much thicker and somewhat fire retardant

Recently, on the way up to Amelia Island, my 1 year old Burlen SU electronic fuel pump, the new pointless type, died while on I 95. I reinstalled the older one which I kept as a spare and was suprised to find that one of the electronic board had burned... melting the cover. ( see picture below). Thanks to the new location, replacing the pump was a breeze.

Further down the page, I included a picture of the installation of a 5 point harness. Being a 2+2, my car has rear seat belts and I just replaced the flat head bolts with eye bolt into which I can snap the Simson harness. For the lap belts and center belt, I replaced the bolts of the normal seat belt with eye bolt as well. While I don't race the car I run autocrosses, speedtrials, etc... and  the 5 point harness is great. By being strapped in the car, you feel part of the car and have a better feeling.
