2001
Annual
Concours d'Elegance
Organized for the first time at the beautiful Tournament Players Club and Radisson Hotel in Coral Spring, the 2001 Concours took place under picture perfect weather : sunny skies and cool temperature. A handful of small raindrops were allegedly spotted during judging but not enough to even cause concern.
Just under 40 Jaguars participated in what has become every year the final Concours of the JCNA season, the final occasion to get that last score to qualify for North American awards or to move up the standings. Despite the slightly lower number than for the previous year, expected considering the recent international events, quality and variety was there... from a 1938 SS Saloon brought from North Carolina to a the latest XK8s and XJRs the selection was great. Very much admired was a fabulous 1991 XJR 15 race car. Participation from the other Florida clubs was strong as well, and it's always great to see familiar faces making the trip to south Florida.
Most of the planning work was done by Concours Chair Rick Hartwell and Head Judge Russell Glace with strong support from a number of members who helped with all those tasks which in the end make a successful event. The main concern was judges but Russell was able to motivate members to try out judging. A week earlier all the trainees attended a training session at his office to review procedures and techniques, a very useful session well put together with food and drinks as a bonus !

Alpine Jaguar of Ft Lauderdale was the event main sponsor which allowed us to organize a cocktail on Friday evening, at Rick and Diane Hartwell's home only minutes away from the host hotel... the catered Chinese food was great, enjoyed by many members and guests. Alpine also brought six new Jaguars to display at the Concours including a red hot X-Type sport...
As part of the
trainee group it was my first time judging and it turned out to be a pleasant experience.
While I was a little apprehensive at the thought of looking at a car which looks almost
perfect and looking for what could be wrong with it, it quickly became fun and interesting
as judging is indeed a great way of learning more about these cars. In addition to the
excellent training and briefing we got from Russell, I was lucky to be on JCOF Head Judge
Jim Kuhlman's team; his experience and knowledge was very useful when in doubt.
Our team was assigned to the XJS and XK8 classes where restoration originality is not issue but where competition is still fierce. Among the entrants in the C14 Champion XJS class were one of our members, Barry Moss showing a very well maintained 1989 XJS Coupe earning a 99.75 score. C14 also includes a serious contender and a very well known participant in all regional events, Phyllis Chisholm and her red 1993 XJR-S, the 6 liter V12 TWR Jaguar Sport badge hot rod ( 9.850 and currently second in North American standings )
Of course, judging is the official side of a JCNA sanctioned Concours, it's the business part of the event but fun and enjoyment plays a large role in a Concours success. In addition to spending time admiring some of the most beautiful cars ever built, entering a Concours is also an opportunity to see familiar faces and people from other clubs we only see a few times a year. This year was no exception with entries from Suncoast, Orlando and South Carolina; from South Carolina Mike and Diane Fulton's majestic 1938 SS Saloon to JCOF editor and highly enthusiastic E-type owner Ginger Corda.
After many had started to leave, we decided to take a group picture with the remaining cars and we placed them in the middle of the field tightly packed in a Jaguar frenzy, pack, gridlock, herd, cluster... take your pick. It provided some interesting perspectives to take pictures... Of course, racing the cars on the nice driveways around the field would have been more fun but... never mind !

The traditional award dinner took place later on that evening at the Radisson, our host hotel at the Tournament Players Club. Concours awards were handed out to participants and door prizes given away to nearly all those who attended thanks to the sponsors who helped the club. As every year, an important moment was the presentation of the Tony Andrade award, presented each year to the member of the club who had done the most; a large trophy offered by German member Karl Schaeffer. This year, board members had voted unanimously to present the Tony Andrade award to Russell Glace for his efforts as head judge, past president and JCNA director.
Our SFJC Concours was the last Concours of the 2001 JCNA season but, unlike previous years, those who participated in at least 3 or more Concours and qualify for North American trophies do not have to wait to see how they place; results of all 40 or so Concours and current provisional standings are available on the JCNA web site at www.jcna.com or right here pending their upload on the JCNA site

To view all 74 pictures in the gallery, use
the Next and Previous buttons, descriptions when
available will appear under the picture.
Once you've click on Next for the first time, you can just press Enter to
activate that button again.
If your screen isn't large enough, you can select a smaller image size by clicking on the
smaller Pic. button.
Note that images are preloaded when you first load the page so there should not be any
delays when viewing the gallery or switching sizes.
Note to Netscape users : Netscape doesn't seem to handle image manipulations in Javascript as well as Internet Explorer. Netscape 4.x limitations : - the button used to change the size of the picture doesn't work - vertical pictures appear distorded - the formatting of the descriptions under the pictures doesn't blend as well... These problems should be solved in Netscape 6.x but we've encoutered some occasional problems there as well. Changing the size of the picture works but buttons occasionally stop working and the vertical pictures simply disappear... if you have MS Internet Explorer we suggest you use it to better view the galleries.
