The 9th annual South Florida British Car Show turned out to be the best ever with a record 230 cars on the field, in beautiful Bryant Park downtown Lake Worth. Jaguars, Triumphs, MG, Healeys, Minis, and many other British marques no longer seen on the roads were there for the public to enjoy. Some cars came from far away, actually one E-type was driven from as far as Canada ! Publicity for the show was excellent as it was even announced on Speedvision's Motorweek calendar of events.

mvc-611s.jpg (52012 bytes)While the weather seemed a bit gray and overcast with a few early rain drops which probably scared a few drivers away causing some concern that attendance would be down from last year's 208 cars,   things cleared up and by the afternoon the sun was shinning hard on the participants and spectators awaiting for the results... what's new...

Being a participant choice show, all had to wait for ballots to be counted which, as we know,  is a Palm Beach county specialty. Indeed the vote counting process didn't go very smoothly with computers being blamed for the delay in announcing the results.... While the ballots given to participants was of the folding type and even featured a butterfly drawing, there would be no hanging chads, no protest and recount, no lawyers and everybody went to bed that evening knowing who had won... (results coming here as soon as we get them).

In addition to the large gathering of Triumphs and MGs, two groups were suprisingly large on the field. First, a record 15 Rolls Royces and Bentleys showed up following an invitation made to the Rolls and Bentley club, causing some temporary parking problems since they were not expected to show up in such large numbers... and they do take a little more space than Minis...

The other large group, and that's something that was really enjoyed by Jaguar Enthusiasts, was the E-type class with over 20 cars representing an wide array... series 1, 2 and 3, convertible, coupes and 2+2,  there must have been every single possible type, in many different colors as well. Moreover, the cars presented were mostly all excellent cars, very well restored, a pleasure to see.

Among the members cars to be noticed were Robert Frost's beautiful 1997 XJ12, one of the very last of the V12 Jaguars, Diane Hartwell's newly acquired Swiss spec 1988 Daimler ( XJ40 ), Russel Glace's vintage racer XK140 now ready for a season of rallying and racing, and Pascal Gademer's resuscitated 72 E-type just out a full firewall forward restoration following a head on 30mph collision with a reckless minivan 8 months ago. Also noted for its loud arrival, Mark Szafaryn 74 red E-type convertible, driven by his wife who activated the horns as she shut off  the car, due to some typical Lucas electrical glitch on the ignition switch...

Event Sponsor Palm Beach Motors had a selection of new cars on display including a new Jaguar XJR ( the 370hp saloon ) and a beautiful Aston Martin V12 DB7 convertible.

Food, drinks, snow cones in addition to nearby restaurants and shops kept everyone happy along with various vendors. In addition to the familiar faces like Jaguar Doctor offering a wide range of Jaguar accessories, new this year was a selection of Royal Enfield Classic British motorcycles distributed in South Florida by SFJC member William Cappucio (click here for his site)

If the park was fairly full of cars and people but it seems that there is still enough room at Bryant Park for the show to grow a bit more next year...
